Request of innovative designs for shelters

September 07, 2017

Dear fellow architects,
Hope you are recovering from the earthquakes and the continuous after shocks. Since we are in a earthquake prone country, we should know how to live with the  earthquake and keep ourselves and our building safe.
Let me remind you that few weeks ago, I had sent you an e mail regarding innovative designs for temporary and permanent shelters in rural, semi-urban and urban areas of Nepal. Since people have been constructing temporary shelters, we should be aware that these are really temporary and we should let people to realize it. It is useless to spend more money in building temporary shelters. Permanent shelters have to be built after the monsoon and the festival season. In the meantime, architect community shall work hard to produce innovative designs for residential houses.

So far the response is not very encouraging in the collection of innovative designs.Architect community of Nepal can not run away from this historic responsibility of building  earthquake resilient communities. Please give it the  highest priority and submit the designs as soon as possible. National Planning Commission is compiling the designs and reproducing it in the form  of a booklet with due acknowledgement to the designers. It is a golden opportunity to promote ourselves and the architecture profession.
In the meantime please have a look at the 10 point recommendation(DRAFT) which I have prepared to be submitted by SONA to Nepal Engineers Association. Please give your comments and inputs so that  main issues are addresed and views of all fellow architects will be reflected in the recommendations.

Thank you
