South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation of Architects

Objectives

The objective of SONA is given below.
1. To promote development of architecture and its related art, science and technology throughout Nepal.
2. To promote the companionship, kindness and support within the architects and to safeguard their professional rights and interests.
3. By utilizing, to the highest extent possible, the participation of the national architects’ manpower of the country in the national development activities of Nepal.
4. To continuously enhance the highest professional ideals among the members and widen it.
5. To develop relations, fellowship and goodwill with international architect’s associations and institutions.

History

Society of Nepalese Architects (SONA) was established in B.S. 2047 by the team of architects practicing in Nepal. Among them, the key personnel were Ar. Girish Chandra Regmi, Ar. Ishwor Lal Shrestha, Ar. Sangeeta Bastola, Ar. Bhuwaneswari Parajuli, Ar. Basanta Kumar Rai, Ar. Swarup G. Koney, Ar. Shreeram Bhagut Mathe, Ar. Binod Neupane etc. The first committee was made with Ar. Girish Chandra Regmi, Ar. Ishwor Lal Shrestha, Ar. Sangeeta Bastola, Ar. Bhuwaneswari Parajuli, Ar. Basanta Kumar Rai, Ar. Swarup G. Koney and the first adobe president of that committee was Ar. Girish Chandra Regmi. Due to Mr. Regmi’s contribution; the name and constitution of SONA was given to this association of Nepalese architects. Then the LOGO of SONA was selected from the LOGO competition done in exhibition held in Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, A-block and Ar. Shahidi’s Logo was selected in first position which currently is the logo of SONA.
The first meeting to form this association was held in DUDBC (Department of Urban Development and Building Construction) in the office of Ar. Ishwor lal Joshi. Then the second meeting was held in Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, E-Block. The First Annual General Meeting was held at Hotel Bluebird in B.S.2047. The first elected president of SONA was Ar. Gangadhar Bhatt Halbe; being the first architect of Nepal. This is how the SONA was formed. (Source: Ar. Swarup G. Introduction

Society of Nepalese Architects (SONA) is an independent nonprofit making professional association of architects of Nepal. It was established in B.S.2047. It was founded for the dignified aim to promote development of nation through architecture and increase the companionship, kindness and support within the architects and safeguard their professional rights. At present SONA has 677 members nationwide. SONA is located on its own space at the top floor of Churchill complex, Sundhara, Kathmandu. SONA has taken the international membership of ARCASIA (Architects Regional Council Asia) and SAARCH (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation of Architects). SONA has been actively participating in representing the Nepalese architects in its counterparts of SAARCH region and in fellow Countries of ARCASIA.
